Journal Entry #4 - Detail on What I'm Reading Today

Hello Readers,

In this journal entry, I will explain in detail of what I'm reading today. Today, I am reading the National History Bee Study Guide. This guide is a short book that explains about subjects and concepts time ago. It helps me learn about history in a fun and engaging way.

This guide also helps me study at the same time for the National History Bee competition. It gives research topics which I can further pursue which helps me learn more about history. The book gives a perspective from a modern point of view to something people used to do centuries ago. A short passage which passes more insight to the reader on this is:

" The Renaissance marked the emergence of Europe from the Middle Ages and its deteriorated culture and economy. Italian trade developed and people acquired the wealth and time to pursue and sponsor interests outside of subsistence, such as the arts and philosophy. Classical antiquity experienced a revival that was accentuated by Constantinople's fall in 1453. Numerous scholars fled to Italy, bringing books, manuscripts and traditional Greek scholarship. The Renaissance spread from its Italian epicenter to the rest of Europe, initiating the Northern and English Renaissances. This period paved the way for the Reformation, a reaction against Catholicism and shift to Protestantism which, in turn, prompted the Catholic Counter-Reformation."

This passage explains about the Renaissance. It hooked me into the book as the Renaissance is something I am interested about. It also includes other topics like the Middle Ages, or World Wars and history about the U.S.A like the Civil War and Lousiana Purchase.

Costa's House/Levels of Questioning - Day 2

The Costa's House/Levels of Questioning is a system that can be used to question an image or other texts. This allows for deeper understanding and thinking about something from a different perspective.

In this image, at gathering level or level 1, I can observe that there are two so-called "people." There might be more "people, " but there isn't any indication of that being true in the picture. There might be a book held in the hands of the person.

At level 2 I can start to analyze the picture; It looks like there are two girls with one sitting down and holding a book and looking down at it. Another girl is looking over her shoulder and might be reading or looking at it as well.

At the final level, level 3 I can infer that there is a girl reading a book. There seems to be another girl who might be the other girl's friend or sister who is peering upon the shoulder of the girl who is reading the book. They might be reading together.

Costa's House of Questioning ~ Beluga Whale Image

Hello Readers,

In this journal entry I will use Costa's house of questioning to create a story about this image:

Belugas are also known as ‘sea canaries’ because of their high-pitched twitter (Hiroya Minakuchi)

" Again," the teacher shouted. Bubble blowing class had started, but there was a weird distraction. It looked like what the myths had said. A "hoomun."
" But there's a... a.. a hoomun!" I announced. Everyone in the class turned to look at the hoomun while I made a swim for it. I swam all the way back to the shore where there were a bunch of humans looking at me and pointing. Humans? How did I know that it's pronounced like that and not according to that old myth? Well, maybe it's because I was one. I pulled off my costume and walked on the beach where the humans were posting and live streaming the video.
" I already have 1000 viewers watching my live stream of facebook!" one man shouted.
" Well I have 3000!" another man countered.
And just like that, I was back. After 3 long years of research and being a whale, I had figured out the way to communicate with beluga whales. The key was not to find them but to be them. Also, when I discovered their language, they called themselves "see canareese" which I thought would be easy to be known by humans as sea canaries.

Meanwhile....
- Whale perspective (3rd person):

" Again," the teacher shouted. Bubble blowing class had started, but suddenly Gef had shouted about some myth of a hoomun being there:
" But there's a... a.. a hoomun!" Gef announced. Everyone in the class started to stare at the hoomun and tried to figure out what was going on. After a while, once everyone had observed the hoomun and made inquiries the canareese discovered that Gef was gone!

3 years later....

It was the day of Gef's memorial. Everyone paid their respects to the passed whale, Gef and everyone was sad because Gef brought a perspective to our community that seemed like a different world. Like a hoomun world..... Gef was a human??

Costa's House of Questioning - Journal Entry

Hello readers,

In this journal entry, I will use Costa's House of Questioning to find observations about the painting shown to us in class. At gathering level or level 1, I can observe that there is a person/inanimate person that has a; a real or fake object that looks like an orange in the so-called "hand." The person/inanimate person has imaginary/real "wrinkles" or folds in the so-called "skin" on the so-called "face." At level 2 or inference level, I can infer that there is a "man" who has wrinkles upon his face. He is eating an orange. At the last level, level 3 or application level, I know that the so-called man might have a bioflavonoids deficiency because he is "old." This may be correct as people that are "young" don't have these deficiencies.

My thoughts on Measure 97 Pre - Election

Oregon Public Broadcasting's article on measure 97 for Oregon stated that measure 97 will increase taxes on sale for businesses' profits that exceed 25 million dollars by 2.5%. The measure would generate a 3 billion dollar fund for other things.

The tax would be funding to bring Oregon standards back up. Currently, Oregon is 7,000 teachers below the amount of average teachers across the nation which could bring up the number of high school graduates. It would also make health care more affordable for the people who need it in Oregon.

Figure 1.1
The people that are supportive of this are mainly smaller company owners tax as it makes large nationwide companies pay their "fair share" of taxes. The larger companies are opposed to this measure as it taxes them. OPB shows this image in figure 1.1 that all rich businesses are donating to stop this measure.

I think that measure 97 should be passed as it really does make large companies pay their fair share. Costco spent $900,000 to combat the measure when it will cost Costco an additional $41,000,000 about 1/10 of their profits.

The reason I chose this article is because this measure could improve something I have, education. Here is a citation, in MLA8, to the source I used to get my facts and form my opinion:

@OPB. “How Measure 97 Would Impact Oregon Businesses.” . News | OPB, 12 Oct. 2016, www.opb.org/news/series/election-2016/measure-97-impact-oregon-businesses/.

Reading Goals

Hello World!

In enrichment we are setting reading goals for this year. I decided to go with the goal of reading more genres. Currently, I mainly read fantasy and realistic fiction. I want to expand my reading to read more non-fiction like biographies and informational texts.

I love fantasy novels, but I would like to expand my reading preferences to incorporate other genres like biographies and information literature.

Memories of Reading when I was younger

Hello Everyone!

When I was younger I remember reading a lot of books from the series that I really liked.

Some of them were:

  • The Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osborne
  • Geronimo Stilton by Elisabetta Dami

My favorite books of these series would be Paws off Cheddar face for Geronimo Stilton and Abe Lincoln at Last for the Magic Tree House. I remember finishing the Magic Tree House series in 2011 and then waiting 4-6 months for the next one to come out.

Since both of these books were fantasy adventure books I still have that taste. Even today, I still enjoy fantasy books the most even though I read other genres.
